Situated on the third floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel, the 1611-seat venue was designed by developer/architect John C. Portman, Jr. Because construction of the hotel involved the demolition of five theaters - the original Helen Hayes, the Morosco, the Bijou, and remnants of the Astor and the Gaiety, New York City officials permitted Portman to construct the new property only if he agreed to include a theater within the structure. Marquis Theater presently is one of nine operated by the Nederlander Organization.
Marquis Theater has state of the art backstage facilities and a sleekly modern auditorium - opened on July 9, 1986 with a series of concerts by Shirley Bassey.
Marquis Theater was confirmed on August 24, 2009 that White Christmas will be revived and return for 61 performances beginning November 13, 2009 and run through January 13, 2010. Its previous tenant, the Dolly Parton musical, 9 to 5 closed on September 6, 2009.
The new Twyla Tharp dance musical, Come Fly Away, based on the music of Frank Sinatra, opened in previews on March 1, 2010 and officially opened on March 25, 2010. However, due to low ticket sales, the production closed on September 5, 2010. Donny and Marie Osmond will have a new show called Donny & Marie - A Broadway Christmas play for twenty-two performances lasting from December 9, 2010 - January 2, 2011. The next production to be held at the Marquis Theater is Wonderland: Alice's New Musical Adventure which will start previews on at the Marquis Theater March 21, 2011 and open on April 17, 2011.
