The R. H. Macy and Company Store is the flagship of Macy's department stores, located in New York, New York, US. The Macy's building has been the world's largest department store since 1924.
The first Macy's store was at 204-206 Sixth Avenue, operating under the name "R.H Macy Dry Goods", which opened in 1858. Following the death of R.H. Macy in 1877, ownership of the company was passed down through the Macy family until 1896, when Isidor Straus and Nathan Straus (who later went on to found Abraham & Straus (A&S) with Abraham Abraham) took control of the company. During the Strauses' ownership, the company moved to its current flagship Macy's store in Herald Square.
The Broadway side of the Macy's building of the store was built in 1901, and the Seventh Avenue building in 1931.
The Macy's building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
In 2002 Macy's celebrated 100 years at Herald Square. As of 2010, the Macy's store has stood at the site for 109 year.
